Ekoterm Proekt with the first ecological design pellet boilers for Bulgaria

Ekoterm Proekt EAD has successfully certified the Pelletherm V.2 series of pellets, boilers, based on the requirements of EU Regulation 2015/1189, to the Commission of 28 April 2015 for the ecodesign of solid fuel boilers. One of the measures taken to regulate the eco-design standard is Directive 2009/125 / EC of the European Union. This Directive establishes a framework for setting ecodesign requirements for energy-related products.

Ecodesign 2019

This Regulation lays down ecodesign requirements for the marketing and entry into service of solid fuel boilers with a rated thermal output of 500 kW or less, including those included in solid fuel boiler kits, auxiliary heat sources, temperature regulators and solar facilities as defined in the Regulation.

That is why the European Union has introduced stringent environmental criteria for the design and energy labeling of wood biomass heaters. Producers will have to comply with them and this will lead to a better environmental use of new wood biomass products available on the European market and generally lower harmful emissions into the air.

From January 1, 2020 solid fuel boilers must meet the following requirements:

  • Seasonal energy efficiency1 for boilers with a rated thermal input of up to 20 kW or more, not less than 75%;
  • Seasonal energy efficiency for heating boilers with a rated thermal output exceeding 20 kW shall not be less than 77%;
  • Seasonal particulate matter (PM) emissions from heating shall not exceed 40 mg / m3 for automatic fuel boilers and, accordingly, not exceed 60 mg / m3 for manual fuel boilers;
  • Seasonal emissions of Organic Gaseous Compounds (OGC) for heating shall not exceed 20 mg / m3 for automatic fuel-fired boilers and, accordingly, not exceed 30 mg / m3 for manual fuel-fired boilers;
  • Seasonal carbon monoxide (CO) emissions from heating shall not exceed 500 mg / m3 for automatic fuel boilers and, accordingly, not exceed 700 mg / m3 for manual fuel boilers;
  • Seasonal emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) for heating, expressed as nitrogen dioxide, shall not exceed 200 mg / m3 for biomass boilers and, accordingly, not exceed 350 mg / m3 for fossil fuel boilers.

Emission limit under EU Regulation 2015/11891

Type-of-boiler

1 PM – particulate matter, OGC – organic gaseous compounds, CO – carbon monoxide, NOx – nitrogen oxides.

2 Values are expressed as standard based on dry flue gas at 10% oxygen and standard conditions at 0 ° C and 1,013 millibars.

The Pelletherm V.2 automated pellet boilers have been tested in accordance with the European norms and standards of EU Regulation 2015/1189, and as a result of the boiler tests a certificate for compliance with the ecodesign requirements for solid fuel boilers has been issued by an internationally accredited laboratory.

The Pelletherm V2 pellet boilers with heat outputs of 30, 45, 60, 80 and 100kW fully meet the ecodesign requirements for seasonal energy efficiency and seasonal emissions.

However, EU regulations do not only set out basic eco-design requirements. They also establish measurement and calculation methods that need to be harmonized at European level. They must be reliable, accurate, reproducible and based on advanced and generally recognized measurement methods.

What will be the reduction in emissions from the utilization of wood pellets in the domestic heating sector?

  • Reducing the use of heating devices without automatic control;
  • Drastic reduction of particulate matter emissions into the air;
  • Reducing the burning of pellets under sub-optimal conditions;
  • Good maintenance of existing and new heating devices;
  • The use of wood pellets that meet the requirements of European standards.
Smoke-and-more

The European Council has adopted a new regulatory framework with the introduction of the first National Energy and Climate Action Plans to create security and make important investments in this important sector. The regulatory framework enables European consumers to become fully active participants in the energy transition and sets out three new targets for the EU in 2030:

  1. A mandatory target for increasing the use of renewable energy by at least 32% by 2030;
  2. A binding energy efficiency target of at least 32.5% by 2030;
  3. EU-wide emission reductions of around 45% by 2030.

Placing on the Bulgarian market of boilers certified in accordance with the requirements of Ecodesign guarantees consumers lower energy consumption for heating and more monetary savings, as well as environmental protection and improved air quality. At the same time, the harmonization of ecodesign requirements for boilers and fireplaces throughout the European Union will lead to the use of better and more environmentally friendly products.

The Ekoterm Proekt continues to closely monitor the development of innovation in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning sector and to create products that meet the highest requirements at European level.
